SOCI 170, PAPER DUE Wednesday, October 11
DESCRIPTION:
This first paper will be an ANALYSIS of the information you have learned
so far in the course. From the book, you will choose a chapter that you will
critique and analyze. This paper will be an application and interpretation of
a chapter of your choice. A simple summary will not work. Show that you can
understand, define, and APPLY the chapter to our social world.
A paper with only a chapter summary and no analysis is NOT acceptable.
You are encouraged to turn it in early, prior to the due-date.
NOTE: LATE PAPERS PENALIZED AT 5 POINTS A DAY, UP TO 30 PERCENT OF GRADE
COMPONENTS:
Papers must have all of the following components:
1. Choose a chapter that interests you. There will be no limit on what
chapter you choose, but it's best to cover one that we have discussed.
2. Give a short summary of what the chapter entails. In your own words
describe the chapter and its basic concepts and define key terms.
3. **FIND A SPEFICIC ELEMENT/CONCEPT** (or two if they go together) of the
chapter and discuss in detail; what it is and what it means to our social
world. For example, using the concept of "norms." Define the concept, analyze
its meaning on a micro and macro (individual and societal) level, discuss
why it is an important element of sociology, and why it is
significant/important
4. Apply the concept or the chapter as a whole to our own culture. Discuss
the policy implications, meaning, discuss how this concept shapes our
everyday lives, laws, regulations, or social institutions such as school,
work, etc.
**The paper should be about 5-7 typed pages (about 1,250 words).
**Absolutely no plagiarism!!! It will be penalized with a ZERO and other
possible sanctions.
**Anything outside of this guideline must be discussed with any of us
for approval.
