NOTE: THERE HAS BEEN A MAJOR CHANGE IN THE SYLLABUS (as of Sept 5, 2001). As we explained in class, the FINAL PAPER is OPTIONAL!! EVERYBODY must take the final exam. No exceptions. But, you can substitute an exam score on either the first or the second exam with the final paper final paper. Here's out it will work: If you DO NOT want to substitute a the paper grade for your score on either the first or the second exam, then you DO NOT have to turn in a final paper. ***NOTE--WE CHANGED THE PAPER WEIGHT FROM THE PREVIOUS 100 POINTS BACK TO 50 POINTS BECAUSE OF THE EQUITY ISSUE THAT SOME OF YOU HAVE RAISED. BUT! YOU CAN STILL OPT FOR THE FOLLOWING: Who would this benefit? a) If you miss the first or second exam, you may either take a makeup or write the final paper b) If you do poorly on either the first or second exam, you can write a final paper in an attempt to improve your class grade (NOTE: YOU MUST HAVE TAKEN THE EXAM, HOWEVER) c) If you do poorly on the book critique, you can replace it with the final paper (NOTE: If using the final paper to replace the book critique, the final paper then is worth only 50 points). NOTE: YOU MUST HAVE SUBMITTED A BOOK CRITIQUE TO QUALIFY FOR THIS OPTION. If you DID NOT submit a critique, you CANNOT later submit a paper. What happens if you do worse on the final paper than on the other work? In that case, the highest two grades would count. For example Test 1 = D Test 2 = C Paper = F Then, only the two highest scores (in this case, the two tests) would count.
