We have suggested that race is BOTH "real" and a social construct.
We also suggested that race, gender, age, and sexual identity are
"verbs." That is they are a process of identity construction, coping,
and experiencing a world that stigmatizes members of these social groups.

Read these articles:

Race as an experience

  Is racism genetic?

Then, drawing from symbolic interactionist theory (see notes and text),
choose any one (but only one) from the following and explain how one
"does" being a member of that category:

   1) Race (Native Americans, Black, Hispanic, Muslim) - chose only one
   2) Female
   3) Gay
   4) Being old (over 65)

The point is to examine how the experiences of the subordinate group
require "management" and are lived in the face of stigma imposed by
a dominant group.
