Extra Credit

REEFER MADNESS and THEORY:
DUE: Wednesday, September 22
Points: Up to 20
Length: about 400-500 words

In class, we've read about cultural change. Each chapter in our text
ends with a discussion of various theories, and we have discussed some
of these theories in class. In this exercise, do this:

1) Summarize the theories we've covered in lecture and text. Use Google
if you wish.

2) Watch Reefer Madness. You can download it from the Class homepage.
This might take a while to download. You can view it using any video player,
such as Windows Media Player or any MacIntosh player. I use VLC Media
Player for all my work. You can get VCL here.

Or, you can simply watch it as Streaming video here
without actually downloading it.

3) For the extra credit essay, do a sociological analysis:

   a) First, summarize the movie, the context of the movie, and the
      point of the movie
   b) Then, select any theory we have discussed or that you have
read about in our book, especially Chapter 3 on culture and
      summarize the theory
   c) Finally, apply the theory to how changes in views of marijuana
have occured since the movie was made.

The purpose of this extra credit is to apply theory to cultural change
and try to explain it.
