REVIEW QUESTIONS FOR SOCI 288 (FINAL) The final exam will be on Wednesday, August 3, in this room. I will give you four questions, and you will write on two. In addition to hints already given, the following are examples of the types of questions you might see on the final. These are intended as a study aid. You may or may not see similar questions on the final. Your answers will be expected to be complete! Select ANY TWO from the following, and answer completely. You may weight each essay as you wish (but in multiples of five only). Make sure that the essays and multiple choice add up to 100 points! Answers MUST include *BOTH* lecture and text material for full credit. *. Drawing from lecture, current events, and text, fully explain how changes in technology have led to changes in: a) Definitions of crime b) New opportunities for or types of crime c) Catching offenders d) Ascertaining how much actual crime occurs *. Choose any two different crimes (one violent and one non-violent) from current events in the past month ans explain how social position (class, race, sex, gender, etc) permits and/or prevents opportuities for their commission. *. Compare and contrast the frequency and costs of the various types of crime we have studied (eg, syndicated crime, white collar crime, violent crime, etc). Then fully explain which crimes you feel are the most costly to society, and then discuss whether we need to have different priorities in our "war on crime." *. Your instructor has suggested that political debates over crime do a disservice to the public. What does this mean? Do you agree? 5. What are the differences between the Democrats and Republicans on crime and criminal justice? *. I will give a story from current events for the exam. Select any two theories we have discussed. Summarize the theories (including strengths/weaknesses). Then, apply each to the story. Which do you think is best and why? *. Similar to the above: Select any major crime story from current events that appeared in the past 7 days and apply theories to it, as instructed in the previous question. *. If you could push magic buttons, how would you reduce crime? (note: you should be specific and detailed, because not all crimes are alike). *. The instructor has argued that crime is a "social construct." What does this mean? Drawing from lecture and other sources, fully explain, given examples, and explain how changes in "social constructs" could lead to changes in the crime rates. *. Drawing from the last two chapters: What is meant by "theory integration," and how might theory integration be achieved to understand and fight crime? *. How has technology led to new crimes, new ways of apprehending criminals, and new ways of protecting ourselves from crime? *. Of the types of crime we have discussed (property crime, violence, technology crime, and other themes from the chapters), which crime is the most serious, and why? What can we do to reduce the serious crime you identified?
