FINAL EXAM CJL 355 FALL, 2010 Select one (BUT ONLY ONE) question from Part A and one (BUT ONLY ONE) from Part B and **ANSWER COMPLETELY**! Each answer is worth up to 50 points. THIS IS NOT AN OPINION EXERCISE! You MUST back up your views with logic, examples, data, and other clear thinking that reflects *ALL* class material. Each question should be about 500 words for a complete answer. For an A on essays, you must demonstrate mastery of material. This includes some moving beyond simply regurgitating information from text or lecture. You must show that you have looked up material, followed links related to issues, and that you have been invested in learning. For an B, you must demonstrate a mastery of material. For an C, you must write an adequate answer that reflects basic knowledge and understanding of material in text and lecture. For a D, if you show that you were at least breathing, you might pass. Answers must reflect all sources we have used this semester! Google is ok, but cite any words not your own. NOTE: BS and fluff will be downgraded. Do not try to slip by by writing something that anybody walking in off the street could have have written. The exam can be turned in at the normal final exam time in our class room NO LATER THAN 1 pm on Thursday, December 9. Or, it can be placed in my mailbox on the 4th floor of BSB in the CLJ department no later than Thursday, Dec 9, at 12:45. ============== SECTION A (Answer one, but ONLY one from Section A) 1. Prisons, what works? 3. Compare and contrast the DEPRIVATION and IMPORTATION models of prison culture. Relate this to the problems of today's prisons, and explain which view you think is best, and how, as a prison administrator, the insights from your perspective would shape how your solved prison violence? PART B (answer ONE, but ONLY one): 4. Compare and contrast Stateville, Dwight, and Pontiac on all aspects of corrections (programs, staff, administration, architecture, prison culture, mission, costs, political obstacles, and other issues we have discussed). Which would you rather work in and why? 5. Briefly explain how the Illinois Department of Corrections works (struture, mission, goals, obstacles). Then, use this as the basis to compare and contrast any three of the prisons we have visited. One of them MUST BE Dwight. Structure your answer as we outline it in class and discussed on WebBoard. If something on the prison website contradicts what was covered in class, use either one, but explain why.
