ON-CAMPUS 452 MIDTERM

MIDTERM EXAM (total is worth 100 points). Pick ANY TWO (but only two)
questions and answer completely. It is due back to me THURSDAY, OCT 27.
You can email it or (preferable) drop it hardcopy in my box in the 8th floor
of Zulauf.

Because we will be continuing gender, you should return it as soon as
possible. Each question should be about 500 words (two pages) in length
(at least). The trick is to show what you've learned.

QUESTION ONE: GENDER JUSTICE

a) What is gender justice (ground answer in definitions of justice that
we have discussed, but link it to gender).

b) List the five biggest "gender injustices" that you can
think of (in order of magnitude).

   1) Explain WHY they are "injustices"

   2) Draw from our readings (marx, ideology, tyler,
plato, religion, anything else) and justify on what
grounds (beyond simple opinion) these are injustices

c) After doing #1 and #2, ask whether these injustices and
the grounds for defending them as injustices apply to all
societies at all times, only the U.S., or to nobody in
particular. In other words, and the injustices "relative?"

=======================================

QUESTION TWO:

a) Compare and contrast ANY TWO (but only two) of the following views of
justice:
    1) Tyler (choose any one, but only one of his four types)
    2) Christianity (either old or new testament, but not both)
    3) Marx
    4) Liberation Theology
    5) Plato (select any one but only one view from Plato)

b) Then, apply each to this statement and either defend or attack it
as just (or unjust):
"Patriarchy is just, because it keeps society orderly, provides for
a class of dominant law-givers, and has been for eons functional for
societies. To challenge patriarchy, as feminists do, is unjust."

=======================================

QUESTION THREE:

We have discussed "rule-driven" justice and "outcome-driven" justice.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of each. Give examples of each
that operate in our society/country/state today and explain the
strengthes of each using the first part of this question. Four examples
would be sufficient.

QUESTION FOUR

Write a question of your own and answer it that reflects:
   a) WebBoard
   b) Texts
   c) Lectures from our two class meetings

(Note: Question and answer must show how much you've learned and can
integrate)
