Final Exam

Saturday, August 5, we will have an in-class final. There is a lot of
material, so next Monday and Tuesday, I'll post a few more review questions
in addition to those below:

1) What is justice and on what grounds can we base our principles of justice?

2) Compare and contrast any two of the following:
   a) Marx
   b) Plato/Socrates (four protagonists plus plato)
   c) Singer
   d) Sullivan/Tifft
   e) Friere
(note: Answers must be complete. Example - for Plato, you should include
Socrates four virtues (justice, restrain, courage, wisdom)

3) What is the underlying foundation of Patricia Hill Collins' "Matrix?"
While she doesn't provide this herself, do any of our readings provide
a basis to justify why we should care about racism, sexism, class, and
homophobia?

4) Are Sullivan and Tifft just foggy minded anarchist idealists, or is there
some substance to what they say? Discuss and critique.

5) Would Freire argue that our Soci 452e class is emancipatory or oppressive?
Or something in between?

6) What are the major differences between outcome-driven principles of justice
and rule-driving principles? What are the strengths and drawbacks of each?

7) Drawing from all readings, provide a strong argument for why we should
be just?

8) What are Plato/Socrates' arguments against the views in The Republic?
What does Socrates see as the alternative?

All answers must reflect class material/readings and WebBoard discussions.
You must demonstrate that you understand the material. No opinions, please.
And, BS/snow-jobs will be downgraded.

Most of this has been (or will be) discussed on WebBoard, so it should
be easy. I'll post two or three more review questions Monday morning.
