FINAL EXAM - SOCIOLOGY 452 - Peace and Social Justice

From the following, pick two (but only TWO) and answer completely. Your
answer must reflect substantive course material. No BSing, please.
These will be down-graded. Simply cutting/pasting from Net sources
will not be tolerated. Each answer is worth up to 50 points.

1) Compare and contrast any three from the following:
   a) Marx
   b) Plato/Socrates (all four protagonists plus plato)
   c) Singer
   d) Sullivan/Tifft
   e) Friere
(note: Answers must be complete. Example - for Plato, you should include
Socrates four virtues (justice, restraint, courage, wisdom). You should
include whether they are rules/outcome driven (and why), their principles
of justice, the strengths and weaknesses of each. Select which you
feel is strongest and why.

2) What is the underlying foundation of Patricia Hill Collins' "Matrix?"
While she doesn't provide this herself, do any of our readings provide
a basis to justify why we should care about racism, sexism, class, and
homophobia? Compare her views of justice/equality with those of
EITHER (but only one) Friere or Sullivan and Tifft.

3) Would Freire argue that our Soci 452e class is emancipatory or oppressive?
Or something in between? Compare Friere's view of education with those
of Sullivan and Tifft. Explain fully.
