DUE: No later than Saturday, August 4, at noon
POINTS: Up to 150
From the following, pick two (but only two). Each answer should be
about 1,300 words, and each will be worth up to 75 points. You must
be logical, accurate, and reflect class material in a way that demonstrates
that you understand it. You must cite quotes or sources that you use
to back up your points. No BSing, please. This will be down-graded.
1) Drawing from ALL readings (especially Socrates, Singer, Marx,
Sullivan and Tifft, and Friere) and various class assignments,
fully discuss whether a just society can result from individual actions or
behaviors, or whether we must have structural changes first. You must cite the
material to show that you understand the various positions.
2) What is the underlying foundation of Patricia Hill Collins' "Matrix?"
While she doesn't provide this herself, do any of our readings provide
a basis to justify why we should care about racism, sexism, class, and
homophobia? Compare her views of justice/equality with those of
EITHER (but only one) Friere or Sullivan and Tifft.
3) Would Freire argue that our Soci 452e class is emancipatory or oppressive?
Or something in between? Compare Friere's view of education with those
of Sullivan and Tifft, and Marx. Explain fully.
4) You may write a question of your own and research it. However:
a) You MUST have it approved by the instructor
b) It MUST reflect class readings
c) The question MAY be revised by the instructor to make it conform
to the class requirements.
