DEADLINE: JUNE 29 POINTS: Up to 25 per team for part I and another 25 for part II. PART I This is a short class debate that doesn't require much reading, just a bit of Web-surfing (if necessary) and reflecting on what we've read and discussed so far. Read the following and view the video that was posted and discussed on WebBoard: http://www.cnn.com/video/player/player.html?url=/video/us/2007/06/21/koch.no.touching.rule.cnn Then, the teams will debate statement: RESOLVED: THE EXPULSION WAS JUST BECAUSE IT PROTECTED SOCIETAL INTERESTS! Teams A and B will take the affirmative (ie, the expulsion was just). Teams D and E will take the opposite. Discuss this in your team areas. This is NOT a race. You can discuss it until Friday, June 29, at noon. Then, the team leaders will post edited summaries of your position and your reasoning by Friday night or early Saturday morning. Josh and I will decide the winning team and allocate points accordingly. You may decide among your teams whether you want to have a team member edit and summarize, or if your want your team leader to cut and paste. Team leaders are not responsible for re-writing. If you want the answer re-written and edited, then a team member should be assigned this task. Sometimes, it works well if team leaders assign specific issues or subtopics to individual team members. This means that all team members must work together. You might consider addressing such issues as: civil rights and law; child devlopment and psychological impact; school safety; balancing rights of students with rights of others (ie, conflicting rights); bureaucratic and organizational decision making, or any other core issues that seem relevant to the position your team takes. Team members will post their views, reasons, and logic in their team areas. Be sure to back up your claims with facts, material from our readings, and other sources. PART II Once the answers are up and the rankings of the team responses given, then individual members--on their own--can start responding to the other answers and critiqueing them, attacking them, or supporting them. Individuals can earn up to 25 points for this second part. Part II will end Monday night (July 2) at noon.
