Gender power (Soci 386) - Team Exercise #10
POINTS: Up to 100
DUE: Sunday, July 19 (midnight)
This is a debate that will begin in the private team areas and then
be discussed in the public areas. Remember - it's a discussion, so you
have to DISCUSS your ideas, not just post once at the last second.
Your teammates must be able to take about each others' ideas in
private. It is worth up to 100 points if you participate fully.
The Exercise: Some think that women have as much power as men because
they can express it in different ways. Others say that, despite
socio-cultural changes, men still have far more power than women.
If women have less power because of the sex, this would be an issue
for social justice. What constitutes power equality, how is it
defined and measured, and how is it distributed?
You must back up your claims with JOURNAL ARTICLES (recent). No
blogging or opinions, please.
Discuss your answers in your private team area--the JStore exercise
we just completed should be helpful.
This exercise is in three phases:
1) Monday through Weds (midnight) - July 13 - 15: (20 points)
You must obtain links to at least two articles from Jstore. Read the
articles, summarize them breifly for your teammates in the private
area, and then discuss gender power an inequality with your teammates.
(NOTE: TO DISCUSS, YOU STILL MUST GET THE ARTICLES - if you don't
have them by the deadline, you won't get full points for them. You
will only receive five (5) points instead of 20). Although you do
not have to post articles to discuss, it helps.
2) Discuss the articles (July 13 through 19). Because this is
a discussion exercise, you CANNOT post at the last minute. Discussion
can start immediately, but anybody who posts for the first time
in the last 48 hours will not receive full credit).
This phase is worth up to 50 points.
3) After the deadline, we will publicly post each team's answers around July 20
and you will get up to 30 more points for the public discussion depending
on how much you discuss.
