For Monday, June 28, you are expected to have completed Chapters 4 through 6. Be prepared for a quiz. 1. Pay special attention to the chart on page 77 of the Regoli/Hewitt text ("Overview of theories and their application"). We will use this model for dicussing theories for the next few weeks. 2. For each of the major theories we've addressed (classical/neo-classical, physiological/biological (chapt 4), psychological, and moral development, assess the following: a) The historical context in which the theory developed (ie, what social/historical factors influenced it?) b) What is the definition of "crime/offense" (ie, legal? normative? transcendent? c) What are the key points of the theory? d) What kinds of questions is the theory best able or least able to address? e) Is the theory closest to liberal, radical, conservative, or libertarian ideologies? f) What are the policy implications of the theory? (ie, how do we implement it? 3. Return to the Juvenile Crime Bill and ask which (if any) of the theories in chapters 3-5 guide any of the suggested policies.
