DUE: NO LATER THAN WEDS JULY 28 POINTS: UP TO 60 for debators UP TO 20 for attendees This assignment includes two types of points: Those who engage in a class debate and those who attend the debate on Weds, July 28. This is a non-mandatory class scheduled for the debates only. The attendees will receive 10 points for showing up and up to ten additional points for questions and contributions to discussion. The debates will address any one of the THESE QUESTIONS. NOTE: Grading WILL NOT be done on whether one side wins or on debating or presentational skills. The point is to do research and share ideas by addressing critical issues. Teams will consist of two or three people, and two teams (one arguing the negative, the other the affirmative) will address their chosen issue. They may divide up the labor, including research and speaking tasks as they wish. Members of each team receive the same grade. Each side will present their position in NO MORE THAN 15 minutes (no more; time limits stricly enforced). Hands and graphics are encouraged. After BOTH sides have presented their position, then each side will have two rounds of rebuttal to address the arguments of the other. After that, we will open it up for questions/discussion to the audience. If you wish to be one of the debators, do one of the following: 1) Organize an issue and the two teams and let me know 2) Tell me you want to participate and I'll organize the teams (the issues, though, are your own choice). You should begin immediately. If you want a special private conference on WebBoard to communicate with your partner(s) and the other team to coordinate your presentations, let me know. Otherwise, you can communicate by email.
