FOR: Module 1 / Transition to Chapter 3: Theory DUE: NO LATER THAN FEB 10 POINTS: UP TO 20 PAPER LENGTH: About 1,200 words (5 pages) One reason we read theory is to help understand a situation so we can make informed decision about how to address it through policy, programs, or other social action. For the introduction to theory, do the following: 1) Read the Juvenile Crime Bill (S993) 2) What provisions do you feel: a) will work b) will not work c) may be "too harsh" d) may be too expensive 3) Over the next few weeks, we will begin looking at the implicit theoretical assumptions underlying the provisions in the Bill. We can start now by asking: Is there a theory of "human nature" (ie, free will, determinism, something in between) that underlies the provisions?
