Frequently Asked Questions about SOCIOLOGY 488-Online

WHAT IS AN ONLINE COURSE?

An online course is a distance-learning course that use a combination
of the Internet and other tools to which participants have access.
This means that anybody with a Web browser and email can participate
in a course at NIU from other locations by accessing material on their
computer.

Some online courses are point-and-click/do-work-when-you-want. Sometimes,
online courses are like electronic corresponse schools: You buy the books,
fill out some forms, and submit the material at the end of the term.

This IS NOT one of those courses.

This course requires that you keep up with the material. The course is
divided into modules that cover several weeks. Students can work within
the time frame of the modules at their own speed, but they are expected
to demonstrate mastery of course material within that time frame of
the modules.

While not everybody can invest full commitment to every module, the
expectation is that, over the course of the semester, the over-all
performance will reflect consistent intellectual investment.

The course will require electronic INTERACTION with others.
This will occur through WebBoard, through interactive exercises, and other
activities.

This means that YOU MUST HAVE COMPUTER ACCESS. Do not say "I can't
access it from my office. What can I do?" You are RESPONSIBLE for
assuring that you have the proper access and tools.
