ILLINOIS JUVENILE JUSTICE/STATUTE ASSIGNMENT POINTS: Up to 25 Due: NO LATER THAN April 2, 2004 Length: About 30-50 words for each question The following Net Assigment is worth up to 25 points (roughly 3 points for each question). This assigment is REQUIRED FOR ALL THOSE ATTENDING ST CHARLES ON APRIL 2. Failure to complete it will prohibit extra credit from all prison trips, and will be a 3 point reduction in class participation. Due-Date: April 2, prior to the tour. Go to the following IDOC PAGE Then, answer the following in just a few sentences (no more than 3). Cite the relevant passages. DO NOT write an essay on each question. Just provide enough information to show that you understand the issues. 1. What is the maximum age that a youth commited under the Juvenile Court Act of 1987 can be held in a Juvenile Institution? 2. Prisoners in adult institutions in Illinois are required to pay $2 (called a "copyment") if they seek health care while in prison, unless they are indigent (poor). What is the policy for juveniles seeking medical attention? 3. Can juveniles in Illinois be paroled? 4. Some people think that we should show "tough love" to incarcerated juveniles, and give them harsh treatment and few programs in order to deter them from future, more serious, crimes. Other people think we should offer programming to juveniles for the same reason. What is the Illinois policy, as defined by statute? 5. Does Illinois law address the problem of suicide in juvenile institutions? If not, what is the rationale? If so, how? 6. For what reason can a person who committed an act as a juvenile spend time in an adult institution for that act? 7. In adult institutions, prisons can be isolated in segregation for many years, sometimes for decades. For how long may a juvenile be kept in disciplinary isolation/secregation?
