                SYLLABUS: DELINQUENCY (SOCI 488)

Juvenile Delinquency focuses on minors who commit crimes. In this
course,  we will examine theories,  definitions,  and trends in
delinquency. We will also discuss the juvenile justice system and
social responses to delinquency.

This course will have a strong internet component constituting
about 25 percent of the grade. This will include Web assignments
and online discussions. All students must have knowledge of
Email and Web surfing by the end of the first week. 

GRADING:

Grading will be done on the basis of:
   a) One Mid-term exam (100 points)
   b) Pop quizzes (50 points) (only top 5 grades count)
   c) One final paper of 15-20 pages (150 points)
   d) Class participation (50 points)
   e) Online Discussion (150 points)

   Grading will be 90/80/70/60 pct scale

Attendance,  class participation,  and keeping up on assignments
are crucial.   BECAUSE OF THE CONDENSED  COVERAGE OF 16 WEEKS OF
WORK IN ONLY 8 WEEKS, YOU *MUST* KEEP UP ON MATERIAL
BECAUSE OF UNFORSEEN GLITCHES,

IT MAY OCCASIONALLY BE NECESSARY TO CHANGE ASSIGNMENTS  AND DATES.
**YOU** ARE  RESPONSIBLE FOR BEING AWARE OF THESE CHANGES.

PAPERS ARE DUE THE FINAL WEDNESDAY OF THE CLASS.

NOTE: Late papers will be penalized at 10 points a day for each day late.
