The Modern Carceral: Philosophy, Theory, and Practice
Credit hours: 3 Instructor: Jim Thomas Class meetings: variable Phone: (815) 753-6436 Prison trips: (variable; at least 8 anticipated) This is an experimental interdisciplinary class designed for developing philosophical and theoretical understandings of the practice of the modern carceral. The course will be organized around readings, field trips, discussion, and WebBoard. The class is designed to integrate practical hands-on experiences with academic exercises that connect the philosophy of punishment to existing practices in the US and, when relevant, to other countries. Although there will be no regular class meetings, there will be a requirement of at least 4 fieldtrips (or a functional equivalent), in addition to interaction at special meetings and on WebBoard.
