The first assignment is intended to familiarize us with google searches and to identify a few writings on the history and philosophy of punishment. The goal, over the term, is to compare the philosophy and theory of punishment with how it is practiced, guided by twin themes of retribution and rehabilation as implemented in prison experiences, administration, and reintegration. 1) Using Google or any other search engine, find and read three solid articles (one each) on: a) The philosohpy of punishment b) The history of punishment in the 19th century c) The history of punishment in the 20th century 2) Send over the URLs to me at jthomas@sun.soci.niu.edu 3) I will send back the best article in each of the three areas for collective reading. These will be discussed in our first meeting, and on WebBoard
