Some guiding questions for readings

The following questions are intended to help unify the issues raised by the earlier review of the 540 course description. 1) Is there a broad ideological, intellectual or critical thread that ties the four readings together? 2) There is a considerable body of research on criminal justice agencies, including prisons. Who is the audience for the research that you've read in this and other presentations? That is, to what extent does the research actually reach practioners, and when it does, to what extent does it actually affect policy? 3) What is "the new penology? Does the mid-1980 "negotiated order" piece reflect or the other two articles written more recently reflect anything "new?" (hint: This question ties in with the 540 description of looking at system in the context of "historical developments." 4) Do "ethics," "negotiated order," "science and policy," or "new penology" help us understand prisons (using Sheridan), prison policies (good time release) or the politics of prisons (good time release & prison closings)?
