Sociology 571, Contemporary Theory, is a broad survey course theories and concepts used by social scientists to understand the social world. Although not focusing on any given theory, the class proceeds from a foundational approach, which means that we will focus on the structures of the theories and the types of knowledge they produce, their ideological implications in practice, and the types of images each gives us of the social world. Following Robert Lynd, we ask, "Knoweldge for what?" The course is organized as a seminar in which students will be expected to give presentations, lead and fully participate in discussions, and suggest readings for their weekly presentations that will begin about the fourth week of the semester. Attendance is required. Unexcused absences will result in a loss of 10 points from the class participation grade. However, upon consultation with the instructor, the 10 point penalty for an unexcused absence may be removed with a short paper on the material missed, due the following class period.
