For November 1, the following will be "discussion leaders" for class discussion of Erving Goffman's THE PRESENTATION OF SELF: Deanna Cada Liu Dachao Mike Richardson Bart Dalyrymple I'll take briefly about Goffman/dramaturgy to introduce it. Then, the group can do a short presentation and, hopefully, generate class discussion afterward. (I anticipate the first half of class taken up by me and the presenters, the second have on general class discussion). Themes that the group can address could include: 1. What is Goffman saying, and how does he contribute to Sociology in general and ethnography in particular? 2. What are some of the concepts he discusses? 3. How might his concepts be used in paper topics from THIS class? 4. What methodological problems underlie Goffman's perspective? 5. What intellectual problems underlie the perspective? 6. Are there any ideological or political implications in his work? 7. Is Goffman doing "science" or "art?" REMEMBER: Sometimes it's helpful to do some supplemental readings when preparing for your discussion. I recommend starting with the journal SYMBOLIC INTERACTION. I also encourage people to look through back issues of JOURNAL of CONTEMPORARY ETHNOGRAPHY and URBAN LIFE.
