Here are some questions to guide the reading of Jacobs' Stateville: Remember for your presentations: Coordinate between all members of the group, rather than send things out sporadically. Here are some background questions that might make for a good pop quiz: 1. What is Jacobs' method? a) Is it applicable to his methods? b) What is the Chicago School? What are the basic assumptions underlying it? c) What are the flaws and strengths this method? d) How would we confirm/disconfirm Jacobs' claims? 2. Review Weber's theory of organizations (either from primary sources, old lecture notes, Google, or any intro text). Is Jacobs a Weberian? (ie, summarize his characteristics of bureaucracies and know the difference between substantive/formal rationality and typesof authority) 3. How does Jacobs' approach differ from Foucaults'?
