Some questions for reading Welch: 1) How would you summarize Welch's book in a sentence? 2) We have discussed ideology: What ideological perspective does he have? (For fun, go to this assignment for another class - DO NOT turn it in; just look at the ideological quiz and think about your own ideology and the ideology of the authors we read. 3) What claims does Welch make that do NOT convince you? (ie, does he speak beyond the data?) - how would you test these claims that you think aren't credible? 4) Compare Welch's ideology, core concerns, and approach, with Foucault, who we've read, and with Jacobs (who we start next week). They all address prisons; how do they differ?
