Tonight, the first half of the class will include this: 1) A short recap of last week and Welch. 2) Then, we will break into two teams in alphabetical order (by last names): TEAM 1: Karon, Kathryn, Jackie Team 2: Linda, Izzie, Aimie, Zach, (Last week's presenters - Emily, Brian, and Jim, are moderators) The debate will be a fight to the death, winner take all, for points (added to your final scores). The debate point: RESOLVED: Welch is just another left-winger whose ideology trumps the facts!! In short, he has little to teach us about prisons or the criminal justice system. Emily will flip a coin to determine which team takes the affirmative (the other team, of course, gets the negative). Point scoring possibilities: a) Winner walks away with 25, loser nothing b) Neither team walks away with anything if both "lose" c) A tie could result in a split of 12 points each You will have about 20 minutes of class time to discuss your position in your groups. Your response *MUST* demonstrate: 1) That you understand and can summarize Welch 2) That you understand ideology and can present the individual ideology scores of each person in your group (failure to do this will result in deduction of points). This is required so you can compare your ideology with Welch's. (NOTE: If your ideology is similar to Welch's, that's fine - for the debate you simply defend your team's position) 3) You must be able to critique Welch using the guidelines posted earlier in the term for reading/critiqueing our readings.
