40-YEAR PRISON TERM IN GANG SLAYING

A reputed gang member was sentenced Wednesday to 40 years in prison for
the murder of a rival gang member. Harry Gomez, 25, of 5004 W. St. Paul Ave.,
was serving prison time for child molestation and for attempting to murder
two other rival gang members when he was charged with the murder, said
Assistant State`s Atty. John Brady. He and another man, former high school
diving champion Mario Flores, spotted Gilbert Perez, 21, after Perez was in a
car accident Jan. 1, 1984, said Brady, who prosecuted the case with William
Merritt. They convinced Perez that they were all members of the same gang and
drove him to an alley, where Perez was shot four times with a sawed-off
shotgun and was robbed, Brady said. Flores, who fired the shots, has been
sentenced to death. Gomez was sentenced by Cook County Criminal Court Judge
Stephen Schiller.
