Reviewing theory

DUE DATE: NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, FEB 22
WHAT: Reviewing theory
LENGTH: 4 to 5 pages
POINTS: Up to 10

You have presumably reviewed Weber's material on Objectivity in social science
and policy.
Drawing from our discussion of ideology, we can now begin to see how
ideology and values combine to shape research and policy making in the
criminal justice systems.

In this paper, the goal is to combine ideology and values, drawing from
Weber to examine how this can occur.

An Example: If we begin from a theory of criminal behavior based on the
classical model that crime can be reduced by deterrence, then how would the
research differ from a theory such as Merton/Anomie/Strain theory (see the
Agnew article) or from labeling theory, conflict theory, rational choice
theory, or "critical criminology?"
(SELECT ANY TWO THEORIES - YOU CAN USE ANY OTHER LEGITIMATE CRIMINOLOGY
THEORY NOT LIST HERE)

What would the policy implications from each theory be for:

	1) Courts
	2) Prisons
	3) Police

How much, if at all, would they differ?

(NOTE: The expectation is that you will look up AT LEAST ONE original
source for the theories you select)
