White Privilege

DUE: Class time, week of April 1
VALUE: Up to 30 points
LENGTH: 750-800 words (3-4 pages)

In class and on WebBoard, we have discussed affirmative action, race,
and related issues that affect the criminal justice system. Some of these
issues include hiring and promotion within the system, community involvement,
sentencing, treatment of suspects, and profiling. Although our ideology
often shapes how we view these issues, we can try to be objective
and examine how an "invisible knapsack" makes the burden of race a bit
more difficult for some groups than others.

In this assignment, read the following article and explain how race
affects police work.

NOTE: (posted on March 23): This paper is worth 30 points - the papers
submitted so far have been terrible. You cannot just slap something on
paper as if it were a highschool paper!! You must draw from readings
on police that we've had, hopefully show some initiative and actually
look up some information to make your points, and maybe--just maybe--put
some thought into the paper!
