Race and SI
DUE: No later than: April 21
POINTS: Up to 10
LENGTH: four pages (about 800-1,000 words)

First, make yourself familar with Obama's speech:

You can see The VIDEO

Or, just READ IT.

Then read these two articles (easy and short) by Professor Kristen Myers,
who has done considerable research on race and "talk:"
Summary of Race Talk and Race talk

This Tribune piece by Dawn Trice will be helpful.

Then, drawing from symbolic interaction, explain how we can THEORETICALLY
examine Obama's speech in a way that lets us begin to address his key
theme. The trick is to explain what he's saying briefly, tie it to
some interactionist theme(s), and then address the relevance for applying
theory to everyday life.

NOTE: THIS *IS NOT* a political paper - it makes no difference with
whether you like him or Clinton or McCain--this is sociological analysis!
