On Weds (Sept 1), we will do the following: A. We will finish the history discussion with a brief lecture and overview. Be sure to read the articles on Bentham and Howard: GUIDING QUESTION: Prisons: Who needs them? READINGS: (History of prisons/18th century) Jeremy Bentham John Howard B. Take a look at the following on ideology, which most of you have seen before, but we will summarize it briefly so we're all on the same page: Ideology outline C. Then, read Welch, using the following as your guideline (for all works): What to look for when you read We will break into small groups and discuss Welch. In addition to the general questions above, we will ask specifically: 1. What is Welch's primary thesis? What evidence does he present? How would you test his claims? 2. How does he differ from the conventional studies you've read? 3. What is his ideological position? 4. What are the policy implications of his work? 5. What obstacles would impete implementing his ideas?
